Re: tape transferring - official government papers
Today I stumbled upon an interesting article from the Government of Canada on the proper techniques on tape digitization. Interesting read for those that need to know....

Re: tape transferring - official government papers
Awesome. Now I just need a working 8-track player (things we used back in the 1900's).

Re: tape transferring
I have a bunch of audio tapes my family recorded in the late 60s early 70s (they would just record the parties/special events on tapes) can I transfer them myself (tape deck to my sony pcm-m10) or should I send them out?
These are almost 50 years old so I dont think they can be played multiple times No members have liked this post.

Re: tape transferring
Clean the heads on your deck (lots of online instructions), and you should be OK. Just in case...do the one you are least interested in first.

Re: tape transferring
Rather than start a new thread, I figured I'd resurrect this one. After years without a cassette deck, I've finally got a used on on the way. My question is this: Is there anything special I should do with my cassettes that haven't been played for 20+ years before I start digitizing them?
For instance, I once heard that you should fast forward the tape all the way through (on both sides) rather than just throw it in and hit play. Has anyone heard that before? I'm worried that there may have been some degrading of the tape surface or that the winding mechanism may need to be put through its paces, even though the cassettes have been sitting in a reclaimed library card catalog in a normal, comfortable environment. Any suggestions would be most welcome. I'm looking forward to finally getting this project going. After all, the world needs at least one more live recording of the Roches before everyone who ever heard them shuffles off this mortal coil (okay, maybe not). Thanks. No members have liked this post.

Re: tape transferring
The FF/RW thing is more for new tapes that have been sitting “packed”. I actually had a couple tapes seize up and stop recording during a concert, so after that I began to “unpack” them after opening the package before taking them out with a portable battery peered recorder
You should be ok to just start playing them but to be safe test out the deck with a couple tapes you don’t care about and don’t walk away just in case. I’ve had and heard of tapes getting eaten The following members like this post: Mr. Clumpy
