I trust Maxell products because back in the old tape trading days I always used Maxell XL II's & they ALL STILL PLAY.

It's not the brand name that matters but who actually produces the discs and/or the stampers for the discs. Maxell has sold discs from multiple manufacturers. Back in the day, Taiyo Yuden, Fuji, Verbatim Data Life were the best.

10 year rule. Don't expect ANY media to be reliable after 10 years. Anyone should be moving their backups to new media every decade, it doesn't matter if its the same media type or a different type. Also, the rule of three applies. If you don't have 3 copies, you don't have a backup. Local, backup and offsite.

Re: We've had a great 20 years!

it's maybe very interesting to read about your storage problems and how you fix them.
But that doesn't help us with the actual topic, which is: TTD will be closed and is there a way to prevent it?
Or is there progress in the case that someone has found who can help with programming to get TTD alife eventually?

The fact is it will happen, if not now, within the next 10 years. They are made with a dye that will eventually fade. Abot 40%of the Stephane masters I've worked on have disc rot issues. Nearly all the discs I burned in the 90s are shot now

I've been around a long time and I'd like to thank the people that have kept it up and running. I honestly won't miss it but that's just me.

Re: We've had a great 20 years!

as different as I might be from time to time from the other people who hang out here I never found a place online where I fit in better either, so October 19th will be a somewhat sobering day -
words can't repay the labor of love you put into this Ms. U2Lynne, thank you so much!

and thanks to the guys w the freeforums TTD v.02, giving us a place to keep the spirit flowing

Re: We've had a great 20 years!

First of all thank you all for running this wonderful site!
I just discovered it a while ago - did not know it existed.
So I was very happy at exploring this new wonderful site ... and now it's closing?

But I don't understand WHY TO CLOSE IT EXACTLY ON 19 October?

Just to have a record of a site that lasted EXACTLY 20 years?
So why do you need to close it now?

Since I understand correctly it is a software issue, not hardware issue.
This site can run even on 19 November 2024, and then the record will be that the site lasted for 20 years and one month. And in 19 October 2025 the record will be this site lasted for 21 years. So why to close it exactly on 20 years if you can still run for many more years or months?

So Please do NOT close the site!
It still runs! Why close it, if everybody likes this site so much?

Thanks

If you read all of this thread, plus the accompanying ones here: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...splay.php?f=24
you'll understand that the site is in trouble.

The software that it runs on is 20 years old and unstable, the current IT administrator, xavier242, has serious health issues and cannot continue in his role. TTD is seeking a replacement with the necessary skills plus a general admin to oversee the running of the site, also there is currently a $1000 approx deficit in funds for the running costs.

It was originally due to close on September 30th, but founder U2Lynne has graciously extended the deadline to October 19th as this will be 20 years since the launch of the site.

If a new IT admin and general admin capable of keeping the site running can be found before then, there is still a chance that the site can be saved.
